Founded in Paris in 2006 by South African-born visionary Etienne de Swardt, Etat Libre d'Orange ("Free State of Orange") emerged as a radical rebellion against the conventions of the traditional perfume industry. Declaring its inception as "Year Zero of perfumery" under the rallying cry, "Perfume is dead, long live perfume!", the house established a subversive Declaration of Independence.
